Cinco de Mayo Countdown

Celebrate Cinco de Mayo Christy’s Gourmet Gifts style!

Take a look at Martha Stewart’s ideas  and the Food Network Cinco de Mayo party menu. Cinco de Mayo definitely looks like a celebration that we want to be a part of!

Everyday leading up to Cinco de Mayo (the 5th of May) we will have a special party tip, to make your themed party a blast! Stay tuned for recipes, décor tips and lots more.

Today’s Party Tips:

1.Cinco de Mayo party favours!

Christy's Gourmet Gifts Cinco De Mayo Party Theme - Party Favours

Christy’s Gourmet Gifts is famous for our Christy’s Crunch so why not share our famous goodie with your friends and family at your party?! We put together a favour for our Cinco de Mayo party and we can do the same for you. If you can dream it, we can do it. (Not just for Cinco de Mayo either, we can help with all of your themed – or un-themed! – party favour needs.)

For the favour design, we spruced up a plain white gift box with some bright colours and patterns, added a bow and filled it up with some famous Christy’s Crunch. Yum! Guests will definitely be in the party spirit after receiving these little guys.

2.  Mexican Lime Pie Recipe!

What’s a party without some yummy desserts?! Bring some fresh citrus flavouring into your festivities, while giving your guests their sweets fix. You can whip up this easy Mexican Lime Pie in no time (really, anyone can make this recipe). Enjoy!

Cinco De Mayo Themed Party - Mexican Lime Pie Recipe

What you will need:

  • 15 graham crackers
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • ¼ cup butter
  • 4 large eggs, yolks only
  • 14 ounce can sweetened condensed milk
  • 12     key limes, juiced or ½ cup fresh lime juice (3 to 4 regular limes)
  • 2 tsp lime zest (+ a bit extra for garnish)

 How to:

  • Preheat oven to 350F.
  • Crush the graham crackers and mix together with sugar and butter. Take a rectangular baking dish (or a 9” pie dish for a more traditional look) and press the mixture into the bottom of it, in an even layer. Bake until the mixture is golden, about 12 minutes.
  • While the pie shell is in the oven, beat the egg yolks with an electric mixture, until they lighten and thicken. Stir in ½ of the lime juice and the condensed milk. Whisk the egg mixture until thoroughly combined. Whisk in the remaining ½ of the lime juice, and the lime zest.
  • Fill your baked pie shell with the lime mixture. Bake for 12 minutes at 350F.
  • Take your key lime pie out of the oven and cool. Serve each pie piece with a dollop of whipped cream and a bit of lime zest.

Delicious and so easy!

Happy International Earth Day!

“Celebrated every April 22, Earth Day is the largest, most celebrated environmental event worldwide. More than 6 million Canadians join 1 billion people in over 170 countries in staging events and projects to address local environmental issues. Nearly every school child in Canada takes part in an Earth Day activity.”

How have you made a difference in the community or raised awareness for environmental issues? We registered a Christy’s Gourmet Gifts clean-up team for Pitch-In Canada. Check out Bernie, our master chocolatier, at the clean-up day this weekend…doing his part to help out!

Bernie the Master Chocolatier at Christy's Gourmet GiftsIn addition to doing your part in the community, you can educate and celebrate Earth Day with the kids with this easy ‘Mud Pie Mini Trifle’.

What you will need:

  • Oreo cookie crumbs & Vanilla pudding (equal parts)
  • Gummy worms
  • Christy’s Crunch (optional)

How To:

  1.  Layer 1/3 of your Oreo cookie crumbs on the bottom of a see-through bowl or cup. Try to pack it down slightly, so that you have an even surface.
  2. Cover with half the amount of vanilla pudding, evenly, covering the whole surface of “dirt”.
  3. Take another 1/3 of the Oreo cookie crumbs and evenly cover over the pudding.
  4. Finish off the pudding with another full layer.
  5. Complete the mini trifle with the final 1/3 of the Oreo cookie crumbs.
  6. Put gummy worms on top or push them slightly into the Oreo cookie crumbs.

Additional! If you want to add an extra special pizzazz to your recipe, add some broken up Christy’s Crunch to the Oreo cookie layer.

Behind the Scenes at the One of a Kind Spring Show 2013

This past March we celebrated our second year at the Spring One of a Kind Show in Toronto and what an exciting experience it was!

The first day of the show finally came – in the wake of a lot of preparation – and that preparation was well worth the effort. We met lots of Christy’s Gourmet Gifts fans and gained some new fans along the way! Our most popular products at the show were our famous Christy’s Crunch, and our Double-Dipped Belgian Chocolate Sugar Cookies. The bunny cookies were a top choice with the flowers leading not too far behind.

Our new Chocolate Strawberry Toffee Crunch was also well received!

This year’s One of a Kind Spring Show was definitely one to remember. The show featured many new artisans, delicious goodies, and some very creative products! Some of our favourite booths included: Tricia O, tealish, and glamjulz. We also loved the designs by Headmistress. There were so many amazing artisans at the show, there are almost too many favourites to list!

All in all, the show was an amazing success and we want to give a great big thank you to everyone that stopped by our booth. See you at the Christmas One of a Kind Show!

A Fun-Filled St. Patricks Day Party

Saint Patrick’s Day, named after the most well-known of the patron saints of Ireland, was made an official feast day in the early seventeenth century. St.Patrick’s Day is a cultural and religious holiday that for some, celebrates Saint Patrick and the arrival of Christianity in Ireland. For most, St.Patrick’s Day has become more of a celebration of Irish culture. The day generally involves wearing green clothing, public parades and festivals, and shamrocks.  ( )

With St.Patrick’s Day coming quickly, many of you are probably putting together your preparations to have a fun-filled St.Patrick’s Day party… and we’re here to help you with that!

A great party atmosphere starts the moment the guests walk in the door, with the decor! Greet your guests and get them into the Irish spirit from the moment they come into your home with this festive St.Patrick’s Day themed wreath!

Christy's Gourmet Gifts - St. Patrick's Day Blog - Wreath DIY Craft

What you will need:

  • Foam wreath circle (We picked up a green one from Michael’s craft store.)
  • Green ribbon
  • Green felt
  • Thin black marker
  • Green thread
  • Flat head pins (Make sure they are not too long, as you don’t want them to do straight through the foam circle.)
  • Sewing needle & scissors

1. Start of with choosing a shape you like, whether it be leaves or perhaps shamrocks, whatever you think would suit your home!

2. Draw this shape several times, using your thin black marker, on one side of the felt. (We did 38 leaves on our wreath.) When you think you have enough to fill your entire wreath, start cutting out each shape.

3. If you are using the leaf shape, like we did, thread your needle with the green thread. Sew each leaf down the center in a straight line. (You can do this with a sewing machine rather than hand-sewing. We just liked the added handmade feeling it gave to the project.)

4.Then, pinch one end of the leaf together and sew both sides so that they are touching. This will give you the leaf shape rather than just having a flat piece to work with.

5. Fully wrap your foam wreath circle with the green ribbon. (We used a slightly see-through ribbon, and overlapped for an interesting looking texture.)

6. Using your flat head pins, start pinning your leaf shapes around your wreath. We pinned our leaves right near the top of the leaf – in the folded area – so that the pins are less visible.

7. Once all the leaves are pinned to your wreath, you can shift them around to give a prettier appearance and pine at the sides of the leaves so that none of them are left dangling.

8. Next, add a ribbon around the top and any other accoutrements to pretty it up, like a bow.

9. And you’re done! Hang the wreath up on your door and you are ready to greet your guests. You can even reuse this wreath for Springtime & Summertime! Just change up the ribbon, and any bows, and you’re set to go!

International Women’s Day Series: Christy’s Passion

As we approach International Women’s Day I have taken time to reflect on my life journey.   I am so blessed to do what I love.

Christy's Gourmet Gifts Family Picture - Christy's Passion to Business

10 years ago I turned my passion into a business.  It started as a spark, and quickly grew to an unstoppable flame.  I never knew I was an entrepreneur, but as my business grew so too did my passion and drive to build something from nothing.  Everyday that little voice in my head would tell me “keep going, you can make this better, keep creating and believe in yourself”.  Now joined by my husband Bernie and my Mother Diane I am so proud of what we have achieved together.

I have always believed that to be truly happy you must find passion in your life’s work.  I love bringing joy to others and for me there is no better way to do that than to share a sweet treat.  I believe we have all been given gifts and everyone has something they love to do.   Are you lucky enough to do what you love?

Enjoy this video by Maika Bauerle, believe in yourself and be happy!

Christy Visits Las Vegas

Christy's Gourmet Gifts - Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas NevadaFirst day in Vegas we arrived early. Headed out to Grand Canyon and found our first chocolate shop. Okay so its not “Vegas style”, but I loved the vintage sign. Chocolate in the desert? Mmm…. Interesting concept. Have to wonder what kind of chocolate doesn’t melt in this heat??????

Yesterday was a very exciting and busy day filled with chocolate adventures. We started our day at the Ethel M chocolate shop. They have a fantastic pecan brittle that we watched them make. Then we enjoyed some Mexican hot chocolate with chili and cinnamon. Next stop Vosges Haut Chocolat. Vosges was beautiful and carried many exotic flavours. Bernie tried the “bacon bar”. I enjoyed the more traditional exotic caramels. Next stop Jean Phillipe patisserie! Great day in Vegas!

Wow, what a site at the Jean Philippe Patisserie in Las Vegas! A beautiful chocolate fountain that mixed milk, white and dark chocolate. Other gourmet treats included designer cakes, truffles, nut brittles and nougat. Bernie and I enjoyed the most wonderful coffee and of course a treat. I couldn’t resist the vanilla nougat with almonds and pistachios. Delicious!
